The new Massengale Residential Center is the area's first new residence hall in over 50 years and provides the majority of on-campus housing for students ranging from freshmen through graduate students.
The University of Nebraska's new Massengale Residential Center is situated in the heart of UNL's East Campus. Located two miles from the main campus, East Campus is home to science and agricultural programs along with medical professional programs.
To meet the diverse needs of this wide range of residents, the new hall includes traditional double units as well as four-student suites. The traditional housing is arranged in 30-resident RA communities, subdivided into 10-person pods, each with a community bathroom.
The building's traditional exterior design is consistent with the historic buildings on campus, using the university brick blend with cast stone trim and aluminum windows. A tower element defines the main entry point and a courtyard provides private space for residents. The structure consists of concrete masonry unit walls with concrete plank floors, providing excellent sound separation between units.
KWK Architects was the bridging architect for this design-build project.
